Meet the speakers
Óscar Hernández
Mayor of Agüimes (Gran Canaria) and vice-president of the Canary Islands Federation of Municipalities.
Teacher, 61 years old, born in Agüimes (Gran Canaria). Before entering municipal politics, he was a teacher in several schools in the south and southeast of Gran Canaria and director of La Viñuela School, in his native municipality.
He was councilor of Sports and Education between 1991 and 1995 and councilor of Finance, Personnel, Industry and Commerce between 1995 and 2015. He combined these responsibilities in the City Council with the position of councilor of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, institution of which he was responsible for Environment between 1999 and 2003 and Sports between 2007 and 2011.
In 2015 he was elected mayor of Agüimes with absolute majority, a condition he managed to revalidate in 2019 and 2023. At the head of the City Council of Agüimes he has stood out among other issues for promoting public-private collaboration for the promotion of economic activity in the municipality and, more particularly, for the improvement and promotion of the Industrial Zone of Arinaga, the largest and most important business park in the Canary Islands.
